School Safety Procedures

All Buncombe County Elementary Schools have a security system at the main entrance.  This system requires all people who enter the school to be asked the reason for their visit.  Office staff may also check picture ID’s of anyone entering the school before they are allowed to enter for any reason.  Keep in mind that this level of security is designed to keep every student and staff member in the building safe.  Thank you for your compliance with all safety procedures as we work together to keep our school safe.

All parents and visitors to campus must sign in at the lobby and obtain a visitor pass or a volunteer pass.  Anyone signing out a child or making transportation changes must show a photo ID.  Only persons listed on a child’s information sheet will be allowed to sign a child out or make changes.  The name on the information sheet should match the name on the photo ID.

Doors will be locked at 7:45 am each day.  If your child(ren) arrives at school tardy (after 7:45 am), an adult must walk the student(s) into the office to sign-in and receive a tardy pass.

In 2012-2013, all Enka district elementary schools changed afternoon dismissal procedures to further improve safety.  Candler School (along with other Enka district elementary schools) no longer allow outside walk up dismissals or walk-in dismissals after 2:10 pm.  Parents must remain in their vehicles, display their car rider cards, and utilize the car rider line.

Beginning the week of Labor Day (September 4), we would ask that parents no longer walk children to their classrooms in the mornings.  We have always recommended this to foster independence and to allow children to settle quickly into their morning routines.  Teachers will have limited opportunity to speak with parents once students arrive.  Limiting foot traffic near our classrooms will help us take an additional step towards improving school safety.  When there is a special circumstance or emergency that would require a parent to walk their child to the classroom, he/she must sign in at the office and get a visitor’s pass.

Buncombe County Schools is in the process of reviewing its website to ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
