Delayed Opening/Early Dismissal

Delayed Openings or Early Dismissals

(Due to Weather or Other Problems)

The Buncombe County Schools’ Superintendent notifies local radio and television of school closings or early dismissals due to bad weather and sends out a call through the School Messenger Phone Notification System.  When bad weather is predicted, you can tune in to WLOS television, local radio, or the Buncombe County Schools’ website ( for up-to-date news on school closing and delays.  A two-hour delayed opening alters the school schedule for staff and students.  The school doors will open at 9:00 for car riders and buses will pick up students approximately two hours later than normal.  To ensure student safety, buses will not run on icy or snow-covered roads.  Buses will resume their normal route in the afternoon if road conditions have improved.  Parents will be asked to complete the “Emergency Early Dismissal” section on the Student Information Sheet.  The school will follow this information when dismissing students on ANY early release days.  Please remember that we cannot accept any transportation changes over the phone so it is important that you know what mode of transportation you have specified for your child in the event of an early release.  You are expected to follow these instructions unless you send in a transportation change note on the day in question.

Buncombe County Schools is in the process of reviewing its website to ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
