Meet the School Counselors!

Ashlyn Gibson - 2nd-4th Grades

I am super excited to be a part of such an inviting and kind-hearted group.  This is my first year here at Candler Elementary as the full-time School Counselor.  I was previously a part of the Glen Arden RAM team where I was part-time this past year.  My undergraduate degree is in Theatre Arts which I received in the winter of 2013 from UNCA, and I received my Masters in Education for School Counseling in the winter of 2018 from Western Carolina University.  I am also a Nationally Certified School Counselor currently pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate.

I work primarily with 2nd-4th grade students providing classroom counseling lessons, small groups and individual counseling.  I also have the amazing privilege of working with our other school counselor Erin Schlecht who is here part-time.

The Counseling program at Candler Elementary School strives to help build a bright and shining future for all our students.  It is our job to help students achieve academic success.  Through engaging hands-on activities our students will make connections between academics and the real world, and they will develop social and personal skills that they can apply to everyday life.

We challenge our students to explore their minds and create goals for their futures.  It is our job to get them thinking about what they want to be when they grow up.  Early career brainstorming prepares them for a world of possibilities.

“Nothing is impossible. The word itself says “I’m possible”.

Erin Schlecht - K-1st Grades

I look forward to another great school year at Candler Elementary! I am excited to be here and enjoy getting to know every student throughout the year. This is my fifth year at Candler. I work primarily with K-2 students providing classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. My schedule at Candler is Monday and Tuesday from 7:15-3:15 and Thursday from 9:00-1:00.

I have also worked as a school counselor at Barnardsville Elementary and was previously employed by Haywood County Schools before moving to Buncombe County. I graduated from Western Carolina University with my Master’s degree in School Counseling in 2001. In 2005, I received a Post-Master’s Certificate in Advanced School Counseling from UNC-G. I am also a Nationally Certified School Counselor.

Please let me know if I can assist you or your child in any way!
