Strickland, Karen (Title 1)

I am very excited to be one of Candler's Title One Literacy Specialists. As the Title One Literacy Specialist, I work directly with classroom teachers, and I also teach reading to students in grades Kindergarten through fourth grade. I assist in professional development and hold parent meetings in order to help provide guidance in reading methods. Both Andrea Sellers, our second Title 1 Literacy Specialist, and I have worked to provide after school professional development and also create a reading program to meet reading needs during our Bobcat Block time.

It is my hope to instill a love of adventure, first the adventure in reading mastery and then in the adventures that reading stories provide.

Each year two goals I have are to provide children with books during book giveaways. Putting a gently used book into the hands of a child is very important. Giving students an outlet to share books that they have read will also help children become more motivated readers. I hold a book talk each week on our Bobcat News.

My professional experience: This is my 34th year of teaching and I still enjoy learning new and exciting things. I have a Master's in Reading and a supplementary English credential which I received in California. The most rewarding experience of teaching is witnessing the "Ah-ha" moment that children have and witnessing children get lost in the adventure of a book.

Some of my favorites: I love teaching, animals, especially my dogs named Pixie and Suzie, gardening, drawing,  hiking, swimming, reading, movies, macaroni and cheese, traveling, learning new technology, and snow. I love snow, but I love all of our seasons and all that they have to offer. One book series that makes me laugh is the Hank Zipser books by Henry Winkler, and adventure books by Gary Paulsen. I hope you'll give them a try and tell me what are your favorites or better yet, ask to share your favorite book on the Candler Bobcat News.
