Carly Powell

My name is Carly Powell, and I am thrilled to be the Art Teacher here at Candler Elementary!  I live in Asheville, with my husband and our many pets.  We have 2 dogs (Quigley Wagmire and Indiana Bones), 2 cats (Evie and Catsby), 1 fish (Fincent Van Gogh), and 10 chickens.

I was lucky to grow up here in Buncombe County Schools.  I graduated from North Buncombe High School in 2006, and got my Bachelor of Fine Arts from UNC-Asheville in 2011.  After several exciting years working in after school and summer camp programs, I found my way into back into the school system as a Title I Paraprofessional at North Buncombe Elementary.  My time there solidified my passion and drive to work in education, and I went back to UNCA to earn my teaching certification as a K-12 Art Teacher.  I've been teaching since 2015, and have worked with students of every age from Pre-K to 12th grade!

In my classroom we do a lot more than just drawing pretty pictures.  I am a strong believer that Art should provide students with the opportunity to experience skills and concepts from their core classroom in a whole new light.  I believe in multidisciplinary learning and with in providing our students with a strong global, multicultural, and well-rounded background through the arts.  In Art Class we get to learn about everything -  from the calendars of the ancient Aztecs to the anatomy of a jellyfish!  Students will get to create art using a variety of media such as paint, clay, and even recycled materials throughout the year.  They will get the opportunity to see and explore art from countries all over the world!

Every student is encouraged to develop their own unique form of artistic expression, as they learn, create, and grow throughout their time here at Candler.  In Art Class, no challenge is too big and no idea too zany!  Above all else, we have fun :)

In the words of one of my favorite teachers, "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!"

Buncombe County Schools is in the process of reviewing its website to ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
