Hello My Name Is...

Ashlyn Gibson

Ashlyn Gibson

I am the new full-time professional school counselor here at Candler.  Go Cats!

To start off, I wanted to share a little bit about myself.  I grew up in Denver NC. and I am the oldest of three. My undergraduate degree is in Theatre Arts which I received in the winter of 2013 from UNCA, and I received my Masters in Education for School Counseling in the winter of 2018 from Western Carolina University.  I am also a Nationally Certified Certified Counselor currently pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate.  My hope is to incorporate some theatrics into my counseling style which will allow the kids a different way of expressing themselves.  So, if you hear music or see me dancing in the hallways, do not be alarmed.  Anything artsy makes any day a little brighter.  My high school best friend and I will be celebrating our third year of marriage this December and we just welcomed our precious baby girl into our family in February.   Sushi and coffee are amazing, but not together of course.  Something else that I love is the sound that rain makes on a tin roof when it is storming outside.

Here at Candler I primarily work with 2nd-4th grade students in many aspects of their lives.  I facilitate classroom counseling lessons for ALL students focused around topics such as bullying, tattling, making and keeping friends, career exploration, personal space and much more.  I run small groups surrounding grief, divorce, study skills, anxiety, growth mindset and conflict resolution.  As a professional school counselor, I also see kids individually to speak about academic, personal and social/emotional issues as needed.

As one of the school counselors here at Candler, it is my job to not only be there for the kids but also for the adults around the school as well as the parents of our students. I help teachers develop plans for students with behavior or social issues, brainstorm academic interventions to be used in the classroom, as well as provide them with strategies to use when interacting with students who have emotional issues. For parents I am here to help explore ways to help your child succeed and feel successful and supply resource materials. My hope and one of my goals this year is to help improve that line of communication between parents and their kids and to also provide as many resources as possible to families in need.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at ashlyn.gibson@bcsemail.org

I look forward to meeting you all. This is going to be a fabulous year!
