Meet the School Counselor!
My name is Tara Ross-Mowrey, the students know me as Ms. Mowrey, and I am the school counselor at Candler Elementary School. I began working here in January 2010 and I absolutely love it! I am originally from Ohio and attended Ohio University for my BA in Child and Family Studies. During college I also obtained a minor in Spanish. I was fortunate to be able to study abroad in Pamplona, Spain where I became relatively fluent in Spanish. After college I moved to Asheville and worked for Asheville City Schools Early Head Start Program. Eventually I decided to return to college to obtain my Master's in School Counseling from Western Carolina University.
The purpose of the counseling program at Candler Elementary is to provide a safe environment for students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. I work with students in many different capacities including classroom guidance, small groups and individual counseling. Guidance lessons focus on topics such as bullying, friendship, goal setting, manners, diversity, career exploration, and conflict resolution. We are fortunate to have an additional part-time school counselor, Erin Schlecht. She works primarily with students in K-2. As I am here full time, I work with all students as needed but my focus is with students in grades 3-5. Students are referred to me by parents, teachers or by themselves. Please do not hesitate to contact me.
