Our 5th Graders Can Code!
Our 5th Graders Can Code!

5th graders in Mr. Schmidt’s AIG class were recently involved in a computer programming/coding unit. What made this course unique is that the kids were working completely online. They were enrolled in a course Mr. Schmidt created using the online learning platform called CANVAS. CANVAS has been recently adopted by Buncombe County Schools and allows teachers to put coursework and assignments online for the kids to work on at their own pace. Now that 4th-6th graders have a 1:1 device, completing work using a tool like CANVAS is much makes more sense. The computer programming course had students learning about the basic computer language called Java Script from the website, Khan Academy. Included are some links to the students’ final projects. They are called “What’s For Dinner?” because the kids had to write code to make “food” on their plate!
